Feeding Worms Rabbit Manure

by Phillip
(Cape Town South Africa)

1. Can I use rabbit manure in my wormery. There are so many stories out there. Some say yes and others no. If anyone can give a good answer I'LL APPRECIATE IT. If I can, how will I go about using it.

2. I live in South Africa. am I allowed to enter the competition?

3. Thanks for all the very helpful tips. I really enjoy reading and applying it.

Kind Regards,
Phillip

Feeding Red Worms Rabbit Manure
by: Pauly

Phillip,

Thanks for posting this awesome question and YES you CAN feed it to your worms.

Manure is an excellent source for worms due to its already high microbial content. I explain this in my

worm food

section where I talk a little about cow manure.

Many people are having success with rabbit manure and other rodent manures. Some suspend there rabbit cages over their worm beds for a less hassle operation.

What you need to be careful about (and maybe this is the concern of others) is the high concentrations of ammonia from the urine.

If you are suspending the cage above the worm bed then you will need to spread the manure around and add plenty of absorptive material such as, shredded paper or cardboard, coco coir and peat moss. Keep it oxygenated by stirring it up once and a while.

The urine can tend to sit in one area and convert to ammonia. So stirring it around and adding a little water can dilute the urine and wash some of it away as well as make the bedding aerobic.

When feeding it to your worms in the worm bin just add it like you would any other food adding some carbon based material. as discussed earlier, and cover it up with moist newspaper or burlap.

Unfortunately, I cannot ship out of the country (except Canada)due to Government restrictions. You will, however still be eligible for the coco coir.

Keep us informed on your rabbit manure project Phillip. I'm sure this is a very interesting topic for the thousands of visitors here at the site.

Have fun and Happy Worm Farming,

Lagamorphs vs. rodents
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the info, but wanted to let you know that rabbits are not rodents. They're lagamorphs. A lagamorph's dietary needs are different from a rodents. Their digestive systems are more akin to horses, in fact. That might matter as far as worm farming is concerned. Wouldn't want people adding true rodent droppings because they saw rabbit and thought rodent.

Rabbits Are Not Rodents
by: Pauly

Thanks for the clarification on that. I did not mean for it to come out that way. Correct, Rabbits are not rodents so I hope no one treats rodent manure in the same manner as rabbit manure.

Thanks Anonymous,

Wormcomposting
by: Anonymous

Hi folks, Happy gardening. Like to tell you about my way of worm composting, mine the lazy way, but works greattttttt!

I have six 4x12 ft raised beds. All I do is put my wet rabbit manure under cardboard 2 ft wide mixed with some ground up leaves against my raised beds, let the worms eat away for 2 months, then throw worms and the worm manure into beds.

This works great for me have a great garden your welcome to come see the most tomatoes on a vine in all of GA,

SEE MY OKRA PLANTS OVER 10 FT TALL 2 INCHES ROUND. THIS ALSO SOLVES MY WEED PROBLEMS BY THE BEDS, THEN END OF YEAR IN GOES THE CARDBOARD. I DON'T WASTE, HAVE A GREAT GARDEN TOO.

Unsucceful
by: Anonymous

I REALLY wanted to feed a worm farm rabbit manure and grass hay remnants. But, even though the worms seem happy for a time, they die. I was then told bunny manure is toxic to worms! :( If it's not what am I doing wrong? My setup is collecting the manure and hay in tubs, letting it dry, and then transferring it to the worm bin so I don't have to worry about the urine issues.
